Why: Sunday School?

18 Oct

What comes to mind when you hear the words Sunday school?  Perhaps your mind flashes back to days long gone: singing Jesus Loves Me, Bible memory challenges, coloring sheets, and flannel boards (you know, those felt boards and Bible character cutouts used for storytelling).  Or perhaps you think of boring classes in which everyone pools their ignorance as the teacher goes painstakingly slow through the Greek articles in each of the Beatitudes.

The question is: Why Sunday School?  Is it just for kids to help them understand who God is and how to be saved?  Is it to corral teenagers and teach them how to be good kids?  Is it to get us to church early, and fill our minds with facts of ancient history and Greek grammar before donut time?

I would submit to you that the real answer is found in 2 Timothy 3:17: that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.  We should view Sunday school as an opportunity to worship God as we attune our hearts and minds to His Word, His Ways, and His calling for us.  This means understanding the Gospel, studying the Bible, gaining a better understanding of theology, and discussing how these things are applied to our lives—and the lives of others—outside the church.  This is the type of equipping we need, and the type of equipping possible in Sunday school.

Whether a new believer or a seasoned saint, a kindergartener or senior member, Sunday school is for you, for your growth, your joy, and God’s glory.
