The Gospel Is…

11 May

Discussions surrounding the “R” word are popular today.  We need to present Christianity in a relevant way to people.  The Gospel has to be made relevant. And on and on the conversation goes.  Yet, the message of the Gospel in and of itself is relevant.  There is no need to make a message concerning universal truths relevant.

Everyone is a sinner under the wrath of God in need of salvation from his or her deserved punishment.  What is not relevant about that?

Jesus Christ died in the place of sinners so that they might be reconciled to God.  If this is true, how is it not relevant?

God is renewing hearts, minds, and will one day renew the earth.  Surely this is relevant.

Oftentimes, when people say that the Gospel needs to be made relevant, they are saying that we need to tone down the offensive, or controversial, aspects of the message (its exclusivity, sin, hell, etc.). Other times, we can fall into thinking that people need more than this message (steps to a better life, a specific church setting/ambience, music, etc.).  However, no matter what it is that we add, it only serves to show our lack of confidence in the Gospel.

Never make the mistake of thinking the Gospel is irrelevant to a person or people.   Because God’s story encompasses all of history (though centering on His redemptive work in the Son), our stories are wrapped up within it, and that makes what is going on in God’s story (especially the Gospel) relevant to us.    Like no other message, the Gospel is infinitely relevant to all people.
