A Ticket To The Greatest Show on Earth: The Glory of God Revealed

27 Oct

“Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive
their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear,
and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news
preached to them. (Mt. 11:4-5)”

Scripture does not tell us what John’s disciples heard and saw, but I would like to imagine that they were witness to the glory of the Savior King being revealed through the healing of the blind, the lame, the lepers, the deaf and the dead.  They probably heard voices being lifted up to God in worship for the first time, and the voices of many others who were astonished at what was taking place.  They probably saw people gazing up at a blue sky and out at the world around them for the first time; people dancing and running about on legs that had never been straight or supported their weight before; others who were weeping for joy at the fact that their skin was no longer marred by infection and others still who were rejoicing at the good news that the wait was over, the Messiah had arrived.[1]

Jesus Christ was the Messiah, the long-awaited Savior King, who proved Himself by fulfilling the prophecies, like the one above which finds its origins in Isaiah 35:5-6.  Yet, what Jesus came to do was magnify the glory of the Lord by saving a people from their sin and ushering them into His Kingdom.  He lived a perfect life, died an atoning death and rose victoriously so that people might be spiritually healed, cleansed of their sin, freed from the bondage of their depravity and enabled to love God and love other people.  And all of this to the glory of God.

In His healings and miracles, Jesus revealed the glory of the Lord to the people.  Yet, in His gruesome death on the cross, the glory of God was also displayed.  And by the grace of God, our eyes are opened and enabled to see this glory as it is revealed in the Son.  And there will come a day when we will be ushered into Christ’s Kingdom and experience God’s glory and grace in full for all eternity.

Welcome to the greatest show on earth…and, one day, in eternity.
