Intentionally Multi-cultural Churches…and Ministries

9 Aug

As a staff member of a ethnic minority ministry, I enjoy hearing from speakers who have seen God move in their midst in cross-cultural or multi-cultural ways.  One such speaker is John Mahaffey, senior pastor at West Highland Baptist Church in Ontario, Canada.  In a recent message given in Chicago, at The Gospel Coalition Conference, Mahaffey spoke about his experience in cross-cultural ministry and his efforts to build a multi-cultural church that echoes the worship of those surrounding the throne in Revelation 7:9-10.  Yet, one of the points Mahaffey makes in his message stands out to me as crucial with regard to building multi-cultural churches (and ministries): In order for a church to truly become multi-cultural, one’s leadership must reflect a multi-cultural image.  It is crucial that minority cultures are empowered and given a voice within the church (or ministry) and equipped to lead.  This is one of the things that Destino, the ministry with which I have the privilege of serving, seeks to do.  It is our goal to see this generation of Latino students empowered through the Gospel and equipped to have a global impact for Christ.

I have included a link to the audio from Pastor Mahaffey’s talk here.
