What’s Your Reputation?

31 Jul

“I know your works.  You have the reputation of being alive, but you are dead.”
-Revelation 3:1

How do other people view you? What words would your family, close friends, or coworkers say describe you? How would they describe your relationship with God? What are your thoughts about your reputation?

Now…

What would God say of you?  How would He see you?  Is there a difference between how other men and women view you, and how God views you?

These were questions asked by Francis Chan at the recent Campus Crusade for Christ National Conference held in Ft. Collins, Colorado. Chan had prepared notes for a message he intended to present to us, but felt God leading him to talk about the issue of reputation. While I’m sure that Chan would agree that we (as Christians) are seen by God as being covered in the righteousness of Christ, forgiven and received as His children, there are issues of our hearts that need to be addressed as we seek to move forward in accomplishing our mission to see movements started everywhere so that everyone knows someone who truly follows Christ.

He used Revelation 3:1 as a text for calling us to consider our reputation and how it may differ from the true self that we oftentimes hide from others (including sin, struggles, or self-perceptions).  He addressed the issues of sin and apathy, and how they impact both our relationship with God and how we carry our our ministry.  He challenged us to evaluate our lives, to check and see if our life matched our reputation.  And, with a silent audience, Chan closed by ushering us into a time of repentance and prayer that I believe is the first step in God shaping us as His instruments to accomplish the mission to which He has called us.
